Acas have audited conciliated cases closed between the beginning of January and the end of March, prior to the introduction of Statutory Early Conciliation. The main findings of that audit include:
- The largest proportion of claims were linked to unfair dismissal (61%) or wage issues (13%). The audit covered the majority of jurisdictions.
- Nearly all settlements involved some form of financial compensation. 61% were monetary only, with 6% non-monetary. 31% contained a mixture of both.
- The mean average monetary value of the settlements was £6,600. Although this was skewed by a number of high value claims. The median value of settlements was £3000.
- Over 50% of the claimants had used a representative to manage the case on their behalf. This was nearly always a lawyer/solicitor (63%), trade union (23%) or family member/friend (11%)
Acas also revealed that they are dealing with an average of 1600 weekly cases since the introduction of the mandatory early conciliation service, resulting in nearly 40,000 cases in the first six months of the initiative.
