Start planning ahead now by making sure these 5 key areas are up to date:
Risk assessments must be in place for all significant hazards that pose a risk to your employees and anyone else that may be affected by your activities. If you have 5 or more employees you must record any significant findings. Risk assessments for your workplace could include for example;
- Manual handling
- Use of machinery/equipment
- Working at height
- Pregnancy or Lone working.
Make sure your risk assessments are reviewed and updated annually, after an incident, or change in your working arrangements.
2. Health and Safety Policy
If you have 5 or more employees you must have a written Health & Safety policy. It should describe how you will manage Health & Safety in your business and will let your staff and others know about your commitment to Health & Safety. Make sure your policy is reviewed and updated annually, after an incident or if you change your working arrangements.
3. Maintenance Schedule
The new year is a great time to plan your maintenance and inspections schedule for the next year. This could include for example Portable appliance testing (PAT), Fire alarms and extinguishers, lifting equipment, machinery, electrical installations or legionella. You can find out how often maintenance and inspection need to take place by contacting the manufacturer of the equipment, or the HR24 team.
Providing health and safety information and training helps you to ensure that people who work for you know how to work safely, develop a positive health and safety culture and, meet your legal duty to protect the health and safety of your employees. You can use a training matrix to help you plan the training you need for the year ahead. Don’t forget your training doesn’t just have to be ‘classroom’ based. It can be in-house sessions or online too.
You must consult with your employees about matters relating to their Health & Safety. How you do this will depend on the size and nature of your business but could include; production of your health and safety policy, consultation regarding relevant risk assessments and method statements, tool box talks, open door policy and regular meetings. Employers are also required by law to display the HSE approved law poster or provide the equivalent leaflet to all employees. Make sure the information on your HSE approved law poster is up to date with the correct names and contact details.
